The sleepwear notes
Women's Sleepwear Guide: Pajamas or Nightgowns?
One piece or two? Start with your preferred silhouette, then look at coverage, measurements and the details that matter to you.

Pajama sets and nightgowns take different approaches to bedtime dressing: a set pairs a top with separate bottoms, while a nightgown is a single dress-shaped piece. The right starting point is the shape you like wearing, the coverage you want and the details you prefer against your skin.
Use this guide to compare silhouettes before considering a particular product. Pajamas are also spelled pyjamas; nightgowns may be called nightdresses, nighties or sleep dresses. Names can overlap, so always check the garment itself.
Start with the shape
| Style | What to look at | Questions to ask yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Pajama set | Top and bottom fit, waistband, rise and leg length. | Do I like a waistband? Do my top and bottom usually need different sizes? |
| Nightgown or sleep dress | Neckline, armholes, bust and hip room, and overall length. | Do I prefer one piece? Where do I want the hem to fall when standing and sitting? |
| Sleep shirt | Shoulder width, button placement, sleeve shape and hem length. | Do I enjoy a shirt-shaped silhouette? Does the opening and length give me the coverage I want? |
Choose coverage for your routine
Separate sleeve length from bottom length. A short-sleeve top can come with long pants; a long-sleeve top can come with shorts. For a nightgown, compare neckline, sleeve and hem together. A longer hem alone does not tell you how much coverage the neckline or armholes provide.
Think about where you will wear the garment: getting ready for bed, moving around at home or packing for a trip. Your room temperature and personal preferences matter more than a seasonal label.
Read measurements before choosing a size
Start with the specific product’s size chart. Confirm whether the chart lists body measurements or garment measurements; they are not interchangeable. Use the same units throughout, whether inches or centimeters, and do not assume that a familiar letter size has the same measurements across brands.
A garment you already enjoy wearing can be a useful reference. Compare like-for-like measurements and note where you would prefer more or less room. With a set, check both pieces; with a nightgown, pay attention to bust and hip room as well as length.
Look past the photograph
Before buying, check the listed fiber composition, closures, care instructions and any garment measurements. An image can show a silhouette, but it cannot establish fabric content, stretch, opacity or how the garment will feel on you. Descriptions such as “silky” should not be treated as a fiber-content label.
A final choice checklist
- I know whether I prefer separates or a one-piece style.
- I have checked the sleeve, neckline and hem coverage.
- I understand the product’s size chart and measurement units.
- I have reviewed the care instructions and the details I cannot judge from a photo.
- I have checked the seller’s current delivery and return information before ordering.
