A nightgown is a one-piece sleepwear silhouette. Depending on the retailer, similar garments may be called nightdresses, nighties or sleep dresses. Those names do not establish an exact length, neckline or fabric, so begin with the shape shown and the measurements provided.

If you prefer a top with separate bottoms, our pajama sets guide covers the fit checks for two-piece styles.

Choose your preferred length

Shorter styles: check the stated garment length and where the hem is likely to fall on you. A photograph on a model does not establish the same hem position for every wearer. Consider how much coverage you want when sitting or reaching.

Mid-length styles: names such as knee-length or midi are useful starting points, but proportions vary. Look for an actual length measurement and the point from which it was taken.

Longer styles: compare overall length with a garment you already own. Check how the skirt is shaped around the legs and whether a slit or opening is present. A long silhouette can have a close or a loose skirt; length alone does not describe movement.

Look at neckline and shoulders together

A neckline’s shape and depth affect its appearance and coverage. Strap width, strap placement and armhole depth matter too. If you want adjustable straps or a particular closure, confirm those features in the product details rather than inferring them from the styling.

For sleeved nightgowns, check shoulder placement and sleeve length. A dropped shoulder and a set-in shoulder can create different silhouettes even when the labeled size matches.

Read fit through the bust and hips

Use the product’s size chart and check whether it lists body measurements or garment measurements. A style that looks loose at the hem may still be fitted through the bust. Likewise, gathers in a photograph do not tell you how much room there is through the hips.

If measurements are available, compare them with a similar garment you like. Keep the units and measurement method consistent. Avoid assuming that all nightgowns should have the same amount of extra room; the intended shape and your own preferences both matter.

Consider the details you will notice while wearing it

Look at seam placement, fastenings and decorative trim. Think about where those details sit when you lie on your side, sit in a chair or raise your arms. If you have a strong preference about a feature, a clear close-up and an accurate description are more useful than a distant lifestyle photograph.

Color and lighting can change how a photograph appears. Use the product description for composition and care information, and ask the seller about any essential detail that remains unclear.
